Picture this: we've got a hotel ballroom full of salespeople attending some sort of regional industry event. Let's say they're all software salespeople. And because it's a regional meeting, it's safe to assume most (if not all) of these people are based in one geographic area.
Now - suppose we have a job opening for a Regional Sales Manager responsible for moving B2B Procurement/Marketplace software. This might be a good place to find that candidate.
In one sense, everyone in the room is essentially the same. For example, they're all selling software, they're located in the same market, and their job responsibilities are very similar.
It's conceivable, therefore, that every single person here could qualify (on paper) for the job.
What's going to make one of them stand out from all the rest?
What's going to make the difference - and win the job offer?
Obviously, this is an exaggeration. Not everybody in the room is going to qualify. But I think you get my point.
The person who knows how to differentiate himself or herself from the sea of candidates who, on the surface, look very similar, is the one who will have a better chance at success.
It starts with your resume.
When 200 people submit their resumes for that Regional Sales Manager position, on some level, they're obviously going to look very similar. So we have 200 resumes that all resemble one another, yet only a handful are going to receive an invitation to interview.
What is it about those six resumes that's going to make the difference? Why these and not the others?
Likewise, when those six people come in to meet with senior management, it's safe to assume there will be parallels between their employment experiences. What's going to make one stand out over the others?
What about you? What do you do? Business Development...Marketing...Sales...Financial Analysis...Systems Engineering...Logistics Management?
Whatever it is, you've got to know how to separate yourself from the competition. You need to understand specifically what makes you unique, and how to convey that message to the hiring manger.
Of course other factors have an impact once you get to the interview stage. Performance under pressure, preparation - other issues are at play. But at the core, differentiation is key. Your chances of making it to the interview aren't good if you haven't done a good job conveying your uniqueness in your resume.

Improve Your Resume - In all honesty, your resume might be perfect (literally); however, it will not hurt to give it a second look. Print a copy and read it out loud. Do you notice any mistakes or any instances where a line doesn't make sense? If so, it is time to make changes now. Also, consider tailoring your resume to the position in which you are applying for. Remember, you want to show that you are the perfect candidate. Alter your objective to fit the job, bring extra attention to skills and training that are transferable, and so forth.
A Mock Interview Before Each Real Interview - Job interviews can be pretty nerve-racking especially if you haven't had an interview in a few years. However, don't be surprised to get some nervous butterflies floating around in your stomach even if you had a job interview two days ago! To help ease the stress and to ensure you are well-prepared, do a mock interview. You can always do this alone in your room with you and a mirror, but see if you can do a mock interview with any friends or family members (especially those who would be willing to provide unbiased feedback).
Search at Least Twice a Day - Since there are more Americans looking for a job than there are actual positions, lots of applications and resumes are sent out. Sometimes, a hiring manager can have enough applicants to hire for the position in less than 48 hours! Since there are no guarantees when resumes will stop being reviewed, you need to act fast. This means set a good goal on search, like search the career sites at least twice a day.
Send Out X Number of Resumes a Week - This is one of those goals that is good to have, but okay if you don't meet. As mentioned above, you want to focus most of your attention on jobs that you are qualified for. So lets say that you have the goal of sending out 15 resumes in one week. The week is coming to an end and you have only sent out 10 resumes, does this mean you need to apply to five jobs you aren't qualified for just to meet your goal? No.
Be Employed by XXXX Date - It is always good to have a job date in mind. With that said, this is not a goal that you can accomplish all by yourself. You can improve your chances of getting hired by searching often, applying for jobs you are qualified for, having a good resume, and having a great job interview. Even still though, you might walk away empty handed. Although there are no guarantees, create the goal of having a job in X number of weeks or months. If you meet your goal, good. If you don't meet your goal, you know you need to put forth more effort.

My clients continually share with me that although it seems like this should be an easy question to answer, they struggle with exactly what to say!
The really good news is that I am going to give you a short script to answer this question and you will only have to fill it out once! It will work for multiple interviews. This is a simple way to break down what to say each time you are asked to share a little about yourself.
You will want to keep your response to something you can say in under a minute. This ensures you don't lose your listener.
Your template begins with a statement such as:
"Well, as you can see from my resume, I have ...."
What you state from there should first include any relevant academic information, years in the industry or position, and short highlights of the key positions you have held. It may sound something like this:
"Well, as you can see from my resume, I have 15 years' experience in the construction industry. After graduating from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in construction management, I was hired by Turner Construction to work as a project manager in their hospitality division. That's where I got my feet wet in project management. I quickly developed a reputation for bringing projects in on time and under budget."
"Then I was recruited by company X..."
Continue with this theme through to your current position. Invest the most time talking about your previous positions that are most relevant to the position for which you are interviewing.. In most cases, this will be the position(s) you have held in the last 5 to 7 years.
Your template ends with the statement:
"...I am really excited to be here and to learn more about the qualities you are looking for in a top candidate. Would it be okay to talk about that now?"
Your interviewer(s) will love your positive attitude and you will get to learn more about the position - right from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Jot down the key points they share with you because these are your talking points for the rest of the interview!
Don't forget to practice your template several times out loud until you feel comfortable. This will reinforce your confidence, too.
By using this simple technique, you will calmly and confidently answer this question - and impress your interviewer in the process.
