Felons Don't Need Jobs
Having a label can be perceived as good in some cases and bad in others. If you are a felon, I bet you would agree it's a label that is perceived as bad. I am here to tell you it is not entirely true. I'm not suggesting that anyone should go and commit any crimes. What I am telling you is, if you are a felon, it doesn't have to keep you from being a productive citizen. As a matter of fact, in some cases (like mine), it can actually be an asset.
How can it be an asset? In my case it was my decision not let the label "felon" steer my course in life. Too often we are told that a person with a record is unemployable accept for the most menial jobs. Their past prohibits them from attaining the success of people who haven't made these same mistakes. Often these attitudes prevent people in this situation from breaking the stereotype of the felon. Being able to realize your potential, by disregarding these attitudes, is the key to turning your past into an asset. I made a decision to use my past to help others and joined organizations to help my community. These organizations were pleased to have somebody who understood the people they were trying to help, and welcomed me with open arms. I made many lasting and powerful relationships serving in this capacity.
People love underdog stories. If you change your life people will want to be a part of your story. This comes true in my life over and over. I am constantly being praised for turning my life around. I have always been truthful about my past and never hide it from friends or associates. I am constantly proving that people can be rehabilitated and change their lives. Most people are astounded that my past actually happened, and fall all over themselves to congratulate me. These same people give me references and referrals any time I ask.
These references are the key to shedding your past and opening doors to your future. I have used them to become successful in careers I would never have pursued had I believed what I was told. Don't settle for less because you made mistakes in your past. Use it to make a lasting impression on the world. Felons don't need jobs; they need to realize The American Dream like everyone else.
